There is also a BIG difference between assigning a book in class as required reading and having it available in a school library. There is also a difference between a grammar school library and a high school library. All of these involve judgments. Get involved with a library board. See how books are chosen for purchase.

I'm a big believer in age appropriate. It's obvious that children are very different in their sensitivities based on age. She mentioned near the end that of course a school library is curated, and talked about why teens need access to reading material that lets them know they are not alone in their struggles. At what point do we stop coddling?

Mark Twain did for me.

@michaelpyro We all pay property taxes, which fund the schools. They are embedded in rent.

@dejavu9605 I hope you don't inadvertently advocate hush-hush. That is what protects the predators, every time. They're wily. Evil generally is.

@agentooe33AD The discussion is about libraries, not curricula. What is required reading should be open to robust discussion, with parents having a right to be heard. But here's a question: is every assigned book an endorsement? Does any teacher, anywhere, assign a book, then say I don't agree with all of this? If not, that is a problem, I think. Do words on paper force "compliance," somehow? Yup, problem.

@havable David and Bathsheba --- nevermind the vicious crime, their first child dies as punishment. Good grief. It advocates appeasement magic?? All joking aside, it's not an appropriate story before puberty for most kids. Every child is, however, unique.

@taraburton5940 I am a huge believer in age appropriate. And kids change so fast, what bothered them today may roll off their backs in two weeks. I agree wholeheartedly about teachers, and general oversharing. I wouldn't want my child to learn the "subtext," that sharing your personal life is something you need to do, and everybody has a right to expect from you. Example: I don't think an underage Linda Blair should have been able to sign a contract (or have parental consent, signing it on her behalf) to play the lead in The Exorcist. But if an 18-year-old woman can play the part of a girl of 14, and create a convincing character, then that's art. (People who don't agree have a right to their opinions, and . . . they don't have to watch it!)

@cspdx11 As in, she made the choice prior to all that. Her family is there, and her neighborhood isn't rich, either.

Well put.

You have every right to do that for your own child. Just consider whether hush-hush inadvertently enables the real abusers to get away with what they do.

@kanyenism7528 You misunderstood me. I agree with Kim.

@kanyenism7528 Maybe you meant to reply to someone else? I think it's GOOD to read books together and say, "I don't agree with everything, but I endorse reading and discussion."
