@ledaswan5990 Does someone need to study virology to understand the emails that were made public? Does someone need to study virology to make basic decisions about their medical care --- such as, whether to take a vaccine or treatment, and who to pick as their doctor or their children's doctor? Does someone need to study virology to understand English modal verbs? Does someone need to study virology to participate in public policy debates, like the federal funding of gain-of-function research, which Obama paused by executive order? Please tell us. We need to know.

@norman_5623 That is precisely the article they wrote as a result of strong persuasion from Fauci and Collins. We know this now. But by all means, people ought to read it. Its genesis does not disprove its facts or arguments. It just means you can't rely on the authors' credibility for anything that can't be independently verified, without relying on their "expertise."

@norman_5623 A person might also want to read what the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic has made public so far, concerning that paper and the lab accident hypothesis in general. By the way, the Cell paper has two of the same authors as the Nature Medicine "proximal origin" paper, and is more speculative.
