  2. It was placed in the US Constitution as the Second Amendment soon after 1776. The expectation was that states could regulate it strictly, but that honest people could not be deprived of self-defense at home. Everything changed after the Supreme Court started applying 14th Amendment logic just recently to the Second Amendment, and prevented the states from passing a lot of gun laws that they could before that. But having a gun in your own home and on your own property if you had no criminal record was never illegal.
