I heard on French media that the officer already apologized. Granted, unconfirmed.

@titaniumgreen5367 Actually, that is what you have to do. Maybe Americans believe in preemptive war, but I assure you that is regarded as an affront to the rights of man.

@dominiqpowell37 You missed the point. That apology was a confession. Now you can apologize to me.

@onrabbarno They shoot kids during traffic stops there, too? It's spreading faster than rock and roll or iphones.
2
@puffpuffbunny1920 None of that has any bearing. There is no death penalty in France, or for 17 year old kids anywhere but possibly a failed state with child soldiers. I thought you said you wanted to preserve "Western values."

Melenchon gave a good speech, not translated unfortunately.

@astrobullivant5908 Drawing a weapon is an assault. Any objective, credible threat of imminent bodily harm is an assault. Shows what you know. Try looking something up, like, for a weird change or something. Thinking can't be that hard.

@rarjun100 So, do you think police can execute every reckless driver on the mere supposition that he might possibly hurt someone? And the shot did not stop him. He drove with the bullet in him. Why do you see shooting the person without disabling the car as a safety measure? You just love death. More brutes around everywhere, and beneath every brute lives a coward.

@astrobullivant5908 You gave an example that is not only counterfactual to what happened in this case, but also has absolutely nothing to do with my point, which was that you do not deploy lethal force on mere supposition. That is never self-defense. Someone wielding a lethal weapon in an objectively threatening manner is already committing an assault -- a crime. You don't have to wait. The crime is right there. "Reckless driving" comes nowhere near that. "He could have had a weapon" is sheer conjecture. As if something that is remotely possible can be treated as true for purposes of shooting someone! Come on.

@JV-dc7om Do you know any veterans? A friend of mine was a sharpshooter, and he knew where to shoot various rifles to disable them while they were in use. Yes it is possible to blow out a tire with training, but it is usually considered too dangerous to do except on an empty highway. Anyone who thinks reckless drivers who take off should be shot is mentally ill.

@astrobullivant5908 Not what I said. But anyway.

@JV-dc7om In Europe, it is highly irregular to believe that if you disobey an officer during a traffic stop, you could be shot to death. I appreciate that you're right about the US, although even there, the weird blond guy in Ohio who shot all three of his sons to death, wounded his wife, and ignored police commands, is fine. I guess it's a lot like derivatives trading -- a crap shoot.

As it turns out, the car was not moving when the encounter began. Nahel was threatened by one of the police officers with "a bullet to the head." It is perfectly clear on the recording. ONLY THEN did he take off. Wasn't this translated into l'anglais? I just heard a full report in the original.

@robertcabu1947 Le policier l'a menace avec une balle a la tete. C'est a ce moment qu'il a fuit. C'est parfaitment clair dans l'enregistrement.

@DeepClips0 In France, they can't lie.

@irenedhakde4692 It DID scare him. What do you expect from a 17 year old?
1
@lero7031 Look, stop telling me how sick you are, that you think police should act like a hostile occupying force. I don't want to know. I want to believe you're marginally normal.

@BarnoRenfro American-style, huh?

@petitben5240 This is the horror of the Internet. You find out behind the cloak of anonymity just how many people have no ethics at all. No sense of right and wrong. I didn't want to know.

@diannefurey7990 Yeah, they get to grow up and everything. True, that. In fact, the lighter, the likelier.
