  1. ​@upstairs1307 He wasn't in the camps, but was hidden away as an infant by his mother, to prevent him from being sent, and he became very ill and almost died. Dysentery, I believe. I have never heard Dr. Maté himself refer to himself as a "Holocaust survivor." His father was interred at the time. His mother expected to be captured and sent to the camps, but I don't think she ever was. She suffered from severe depression during and right after the war. I'm not sure she ever recovered fully. The father survived as well, and the whole family was ultimately reunited. When as a young man Dr. Maté began questioning Zionism, his father threw him out of the house.
