The Normandy Invasion had two purposes: to accelerate the Axis defeat and to stop the Red Army and their resistance allies in Western Europe. In other words, to ensure that the victors of WWII did not gain political power in Western Europe in the aftermath of the war. For a more realistic view of America's role, see Operation Paperclip and the rat line. The fact that our NATO allies are all on financial thin ice today is no accident, by the way.
