I had never seen Drag Queen Story Hour, and had heard about it once, thinking it had happened only once. So I had to check out some performances online. The few I saw for very young children were no racier than having a clown read to kids. If something else is going on somewhere else, that's different.

In libraries, it is purely voluntary and a lot of people like it. Also, in libraries, unlike schools, the parents are there with their children. Some of the drag queens look and act like clowns. It's literally that innocent.

@roushanam Watch some videos. The story hour is packed, and because it is not school, it is voluntary and the parents are present with their kids. News flash: the First Amendment prevents the viewpoint discrimination you say conservatives want. The library is a traditional First Amendment forum. School is not.

@roushanam Cheerleaders and football aren't innocent, either -- the latter can cause neurological harm to developing brains. (Possibly the former can as well?) How ironic that boys are encouraged to practice a sport that can damage their brains --- by their school. No other country does that.

@roushanam I wouldn't be one of those who is embroiled in American politics because I'm non-Western, highly gender-specific for cultural reasons, multilingual, and plan to go back to where my parents came from -- which of course America bombed. I'm one of those. P. S. I didn't vote in 2016, and voted third party, in person, on election day in 2020. La Riva Peltier, as a protest of Peltier's continued illegal imprisonment.

I agree. It's not for school. But in the videos I just saw, which were purely voluntary-attendance presentations at libraries, these story hours were no different from having a clown read to kids. It had that vibe. The makeup and costuming were not suggestive or sexy but very clownish, and a lot of the kids were preschool. All the kids had their parents with them, of course. Figures.

@unknownknowable Good points across the board. All of these presentations are not alike, obviously. As far as what is taught in school: lots of kids are in one-parent families, blended families, have unmarried parents, or are being raised by same-sex married couples, or even a drag queen father. Before high school, the emphasis should be on bullying prevention. Everyone's family is a nice family, everyone is welcome in school regardless of who their parents are. That's what you tell first graders. Later, you say more. (It's called puberty, and needs to be respected.) The mayor where I live is in a same-sex interracial marriage and they have a young daughter. Richard Nixon's stunning granddaughter, who is big in regional theatre, was married to a man, got divorced, and many years later married a woman. They are raising a daughter, too. No one should ever say a peep to these kids. Young kids have vulnerable moments and should never be teased about their family.
