@utah_koidragon7117 They really don't want us talking! In the end, we agree too much for their comfort. Looks like something got through. Hmm. Not sure whether we can both see the same? SMH

The irony is that what is really wrong with public education is being obscured by this flashy nonsense that is relatively unusual by comparison to the real problems, which are endemic now. Schools have been more or less deficit for at least three generations, and the supposed "cure" has been worse than the disease, every time. Every round of reforms has made things worse.

Not with the harmful distractions we have. There is more and more actual evidence that screens from a young age impairs cognitive development.

@ashp3387 That is where most of our medicines are manufactured now. But not for these vaccines. Funny, isn't it?

Everyone had to homeschool to some extent during the pandemic. Some of the inevitable challenges of homeschooling then came to light --- as did some of the grave problems with the classroom curriculum. You can't fix something you won't face.

Well, the differences among home-schooled youth are at least as great if not greater than the differences among graduates of the very finest schools compared with graduates of the very worst. If these objections to homeschooling don't apply to you, then they don't apply to you. As a comparison, the exclusive private high school Bill Gates attended provided at least a year of college-level mathematics, and two solid years of college literature. Some kids graduate from high school without having read a novel. Remedial math is now a college class, and only the most basic courses don't provide college credit. This was unheard-of in 1960, and only became common after 1990.

@utah_koidragon7117 To start by answering your question: No, I don't think that the public schools in general are doing a good job of socializing children and youth, or of educating them, or of pretty much anything else they are supposed to be doing. I would never suggest that a lot of kids don't thrive in home schooling, whereas they would suffer or even be endangered if they were sent to public school. But I stand by what I said. The differences you will see between home-schooled children will be even greater than the differences among children who attend conventional schools. The disparities between the best and worst will be even greater. That has been borne out. I'm not saying Tara Westover is typical. Of course she's not. But don't think she's a rarity, either. She's not that, either. How did we come to this? Just how much does a person have to do on their own --- and not only without support, but with all sorts of institutional forces undermining them?
