  1. This was it. This is the book I used to learn trigonometry in one long weekend, and qualify for Calculus I. I still do not know how I did that, but I am absolutely certain that I could not have done it using any other book. Wow, what memories, lol.

  3. @GaloSigma395  I don't remember -- I was living at home, and had no chores or errands to do, I could just put in entire days. I love math but am not at all gifted in it. This somehow clicked. It was great.

  6. WOW!! I learned trigonometry from that author in one long weekend!!! There was just something about how he explained stuff that clicked. Believe me, I would not not NOT have been able to do this with another book. I tried. No. This was the author for me. That's how I did it.

  7. I'm not sure I ever differentiated a vector-valued function. If I did, I don't know about it. Was I there? 😅

  8. He needs a gentle introduction to proofs at this point. What do you think is the best approach? Also: get a linear algebra book that covers the VERY SAME material, but from a more advanced standpoint, and try working through it. Linear algebra for sure, and maybe also calculus I (such as a text that's a blend of calculus and introductory real analysis). See how those go. If you like them, you are "mathematically mature."

  13. I wouldn't say "stop trying to understand." I would say don't stop just because you don't understand. NEVER stop just because there is something you don't understand. If you are working on challenging problems, there will *always* be a ton of stuff you do not understand.

  14. Exactly. I used to carefully copy each example and try to understand exactly why the example was there. Then I got Schaum's and did all of those problems, too. A lot of times, the examples really tell you more than meets the eye.

  16. I loved Loomis for Intro Calculus. It educated my intuition in such a good way, for me at least. I never once flubbed a limit problem . . . Well, only one time, but I caught it and corrected it at the last minute. I still remember that, lol. I got them right the first time, except for that time. I used to seek them out and do all of them from other books. Crazy. 😅

  19. You know, 70 is too old to win a Fields Medal. If your goal is a very high quality Master's in mathematics or physics -- or just about anything short of physical education with a specialty in gymnastics -- I promise you, you can do it. It's not even a question. It's a YES. In fact, it won't take you seven years. Six, TOPS. I bet five. In five years, you'll be five years older, whether you study math or not. Of course, if you do study math, you will be cognitively younger than you would have been if you hadn't studied math. But I digress. 😊

  20. P. S. A PhD is certainly possible, too, but a little luck in choosing the right area of research, and the right thesis advisor, will affect your progress. The part that doesn't require luck, no problem. You can do all of that. A PhD in mathematics education is a sure thing.

  21. @Jonathan_Y9898  I am not sure, but this happened in the late 1970s, if that helps. It was a stand-alone trigonometry book, and for me, it was as intuitive as Loomis for calculus was during that period. I will try to find it. If I owned it, I'm sure I have it still.

  22. ​@LordZombieZanetta I wasn't gifted in math, but I suddenly fell in love with it (after studying Plato, and having a great math TA in college). I LOVED a text not used as often now, by Loomis. It trained my intuition so perfectly, I can't tell you. I have a very algebraic and logical mind, but decidedly poor spatial intuition, so Loomis was a godsend. I never once got a limit problem wrong, and I used to buy other books for more practice and do all those problems, too. Thanks to Loomis, I understood a lot of the three dimensional applications I would never have gotten otherwise. If Thomas had been our sole textbook, I'm not sure I would have succeeded. (I got all As.) 😊

  26. Read Frankel's Love and Math. Don't worry, I'm not perverse. This is a rigorous book, but a FUN book.

  27. Maybe you took more challenging classes. If I didn't understand 95% every day, I was crazed about it. I had a full minor, so: calculus, adv. calc, diff eq, etc., and my most advanced class was . . . Abstract Algebra.

  31. I am still a dévotée of Loomis. Loomis hit the spot for me. It honed my intuition, which is not something I am naturally good at because my spatial abilities are poor. I think I have the strongest logic and poorest spatial intuition combo of anyone I have ever met. In fact I'm sure I do. 😢

  32. I am really good (but not absolutely brilliant) in logic, and have an "algebraic" mind, but really poor spatial intuition. This was why I only got good in math after studying philosophy. I ended up majoring in both. And in no way am I gifted in it. I have limitations I've accepted. Also . . . Smullyan is a blast. If you think like me, check out Smullyan. You'll love him.

  37. Bartle is easy and intuitive. I did beginners calculus with Loomis, then bought other books to do the problems, mostly. Older editions of Bartle include the Cantor set. I think the latest ones don't.
