In a recent documentary, Adam Curtis talked about how Putin's intelligence services were doing exactly this -- creating or provoking "movements" where no one knew who was really behind the scenes pulling the strings. Obviously the goal is to undermine all trust. Even more obviously, this technique is being used all around us. This is why Curtis highlights it.

@debbiedogs1 I'm gullible? I've been following the uprisings in Europe for longer than that. In France, the firefighters were already taking the side of demonstrators against police, and protecting them -- and I don't mean just once. This happened before the pandemic, of course. If you think you can rely on Americans, or anyone from the Five Eyes, to be authentically what they seem to be, and not be bribed, well . . . have it your way and good luck.

@debbiedogs1 When did I say Russia was causing any of that? If any Westerner read what I said that way, that says something about them. If I want to know about Russia, all I have to do is to compare the mourners in Moscow for Gorbachev with those in London for the Queen. The English look so much worse that it is shocking, and disturbing to anyone with a heart. I'm saddened, truly. That doesn't change the fact that Putin experimented with propaganda exactly as described, and that his experiments did not go unnoticed here. It's the only thing these oligarchs will emulate.

@debbiedogs1 I should have been clear -- Putin experimented with funding movements in Russia proper. Remember how the US co-opted and funded Otpor in Serbia? Some of the young Serbian members of Otpor featured on ABC Nightlight could not manage to hide their smirks. This is the sort of thing I was thinking of. I should remember my audience; most have no clue about it.
