I said in another post that the relationship between France and Russia is more complex than that between England or Germany and Russia -- and that goes double or triple for the relationship between Russians and East European Jews. You hear its echoes everywhere. I think that for every Nuland, there are two Norman Finkelsteins, but the latter will never have power, so the former are able to create the illusion of being in the majority. The German Romantic notion of the Volk partially reborn in modern Russia reminds me of Marx's dictum: first as tragedy, then as farce. There are some ways in which Russia is more cosmopolitan than the West and always has been. The saner people in Russia embrace it as a strength. Emmanuel Todd has a lot of insightful things to say about all that.

  4. France does not have the same relationship with Russia as do the Anglo-Saxons and the Germans. France has always had a more complex and generally better relationship with Slavic peoples, and this dates back to their ancestral tribes in ancient times, when the continental Celts and the first Slavic tribes to enter central Europe lived side by side in relative harmony.

  5. I think American hatred of Russia has the very same substrate as every other American hatred: race. The Hitler hierarchy did not originate with Hitler, nor did it die with him. The biggest clue is the peculiar combination of hatred, fascination, and surprise: you see the very same emotions directed toward people of African descent. Who are these backward "white" people, who are clearly not Western --- and so many of them have vaguely Asian features, too! Even the blond ones do. How is that possible? And how come they get along so well with the global south? We're the diverse ones! Why don't those people like us better? We're clearly so much cooler, not to mention richer. That's what I see.
