This war should have ended months ago, with Crimea and the Donbass either under the Russian Federation or as independent, Russian-allied regions, and the impoverished Ukrainian people at peace, without their homes and livelihood destroyed. Yes, of course, the US has its paws all over this. But Putin escalated this war. He has clearly fallen into their trap. He is to blame for that. The US does not invade anywhere without an aerial blitzkrieg first. It establishes dominance, and relies on propaganda and "soft" power, and hard power, to cover its tracks and avoid answering for war crimes against civilians. Yet it has not been winning its wars, either. How Putin expected to is a mystery to me. He must be surrounded by sycophants. This war is both immoral and an unmitigated disaster.

Russia could conclude this war rapidly using decisive force. The West could conclude this war by withdrawing all but purely defensive, interim military support and setting up the structure for peace negotiations. Why aren't they? What's really going on?

P. S. Not only is the Donbass not safe, but CRIMEA has been destroyed and assassinations abound. No one can say Putin has done anything right, or that he's playing chess or some other absurdity. It's too late in the day to keep blaming the US, however much that may have been true leading up to the current disaster.

@Asma-ep9bx Well, I maintain that the US had a huge role in causing this conflict -- but why did he play into their hands? No excuses! He is wasting blood and treasure, and destroying the lives and livelihood and housing stock of some of Europe's poorest people.

Let's be clear, however much the US is responsible for the last 8 years leading up to this escalation, Putin was wrong, first, to escalate when he chose. There were still alternative courses. Second, the Russian allies should have secured the Donbass months ago. The current fighting is sheer brutality. I don't minimize America's role. But we all know the non-NATO world has to deal with them, knowing full well who they are and what they do . . . Sorry. No apologetics for Putin. He, too, is presiding over a catastrophe. He made grave choices too, gravely wrong. At least from the look on his face, he realizes it. As for Biden, Pelosi, and the rest of that motley crew, well . . .

I am curious about one thing: do Americans understand how much they are hated by most people in the world, and do they know why? Naive questions, like the beginner's mind, are best.

Can they take Kiev without an American-style bombing campaign, which they will not do, assuming they could do it without retaliation? I do not think so. I keep remembering how Churchill ordered the destruction of the French Navy in the Mediterranean, and killed all those sailors who had pledged to join the Resistance, and mutiny to do it if necessary, only a day after they hosted the British aboard their ships. Churchill never lost a moment of sleep over that. He tuned out everyone who felt he had miscalculated, and in the end might made right, as usual. Can the Russians do the equivalent? I can't see it. They were not ready for this.

I think you are making sense . . . perhaps not in the details, exactly, but certainly grosso modo. What the Russians are doing now is wasting lives and treasure, and that is inexcusable. No one seems to appreciate what the US can and will do, without an afterthought. If they could fake a nuclear attack coming from Moscow and destroy Russia on that account, I have no doubt they would.

@lilacer6841 What is the "problem?" The problem is that this war should have ended in April, and when that failed to happen, then by the end of June. There is no putting lipstick on this pig. Yes, the US had its filthy paws all over this initially . . . and Putin played directly into those paws.

Of course there's a way to get Russia to part with its oil without their getting paid for it: you bomb them and then you rob them. What's not to like? /s The US has plenty of experience in this. It doesn't win wars in any traditional sense, or engage in a hidebound 19th-century version of imperialism, but it does seize resources in sufficient quantities to maintain and control its massively indebted economy. That's the point.

@Asma-ep9bx Here we are in September, for something that should have ended in April, with Donbass liberated and Crimea firmly in Russian hands, and no further NATO expansion. Instead, Crimea has been destroyed and civilians who had lived there for generations had to evacuate. Not to mention the Ukrainian refugees, not knowing what has become of their modest homes, or the young men they left behind, and facing a winter where even Europe will be hurting for heat. What kind of person can defend the indefensible?? To have escalated this conflict to full-fledged war without any measure of certainty of quick success was a crime. You just do not do this, ever. It is never justified.

This is all entirely true. It is also true that Putin has in large part made grave mistakes. His management of the economy is his only clear success, no small matter. But to expand this war well beyond what it was 2014 to February 2022 and changing its character -- which was already wrong as long as there were other options available -- then failing to bring it to a rapid close, and all this on the heels of a pandemic, in the poorest country in Europe, was and is terrible. I tend to have some sympathy for Putin for the simple reason that the West is led by far worse. Faint praise, though. A tragedy all the way around. A terrible failure so far. War is a last resort. A war of attrition is unconscionable. Destruction of housing stock in any country but especially a poor country is a tragedy, nevermind harming civilians. How easily we accept war!

It's so simple you could explain it to a child: EU can't pay Russia by putting the money in a bank that will steal Russia's money. It has to pay Russia by paying the money to Russia's own bank, where nothing will happen to it.

@foxythedirtydog4494 Well, some (not most) are being destroyed, or seized, or sold, which was predictable. The US probably already factored that in. It's not as if US arms never reach the hands of terrorists. The cynicism of US leadership is second to none.
