Newsflash: the most common major in America BY FAR is Business, and has been for decades and decades. As for the real "left," which exists in France, Spain, and so forth, it strongly supports teaching Latin and Greek and calculus in public high schools. Murray has a good job denouncing Gender Studies and so forth. What would he do, that is as easy and lucrative, without the gender warriors? Symbiotic relationship.

What is true is that public health authorities had no way of predicting that. The science pointed to there being a significant risk, and those who denied the risk did so on partisan political grounds. It turned out that being outdoors and having masks (which many had to cover up identities, too) cut the risk dramatically.

@aichujohnson8444 Why mix protected speech and defamation? You can SUE for defamation, and even in extreme circumstances for intentional infliction of emotional distress, and for harassment if it occurs in a place you can't simply leave, like at your job.

@aichujohnson8444 Most line drawing in law has some degree of arbitrariness, so that frankly proves nothing. For one thing, defamation always purports to be about a factual matter, and truth is a complete defense. What people perceive as hyperbole, trash talk, opinion, or invective can never be the subject of a defamation suit. The outer reaches of free speech are not a simple topic. I really recommend Nadine Strossen's book, where she shows over and over how "hate speech" codes were invariably perverted, and used against those they were intended to protect. I don't agree with absolutely every word, but anyone who is serious about banning hate speech needs to see all the arguments against speech codes first.

Do you REALLY not know that the most common major is Business, and has been for decades and decades? And the next largest group of majors relate to biology and health sciences? Less than a fraction of a percent of degrees are in Gender Studies and the like. Business is a phony degree unless it includes advanced mathematics and finance, or sufficient accounting to qualify for the CPA. An English major who studies Shakespeare has a more challenging program, and can read and write.

@jasonrudisill299 Nah, it's not that simple -- or maybe it's simpler. Pretty much everybody is taught to undermine everybody else, and turn every encounter into a jockeying for position in a hierarchy. This is the complete obsession with competition that you rarely escape in America. This wears people down. Mix in drugs, other substances, poor sleep, bad diet, bad family relationships, intense new media usage, and of course lots of firearms -- and most people are nuts. Well, hypersensitive anyway. It's normal given the context. If you ever lived in another culture, you's be struck by how much calmer people are, and how what someone says to you or about you just doesn't matter.
