To oppose a treatment a typical side effect of which is permanent sterilization is not unreasonable. I can't believe that a society with a long, ugly history of eugenics isn't suspicious of puberty blockers in teens, just because they are not "gender-typical." So what if they aren't? Should only cheerleaders and football players have kids? That's where we are.

@letsomethingshine That minors should be allowed to have treatments that will likely sterilize them for life is not "science." It is a policy choice. And it makes money for someone. Choice means the choice to be a birth parent someday. Some people decide to do that in their 30s and 40s, and had no idea they would want to when they were only 16. I am for protecting choice, "even" for kids with gender dysphoria and fluid gender presentation.

@letsomethingshine Laws that protect a child's future ability to have children of their own can only enhance life. It cannot be used "against me." I agree that it is a tragedy that the law has to be invoked for every obvious ethical decision. The right to found a family one day is a Universal Human Right. Read the charter. No one should interfere with that right. Only an adult can decide.

@lucasmurphy740 Never follow only US sources on public health matters. The financial incentives in developed countries that have socialized medicine are much more sane than they are under the US system of commercial medicine. I always want to see what Europeans are doing. A word to the wise . . .

@benjaminfranklin8412 I agree with you. How anyone could be duped into supporting the grave risk of sterilization of minors is beyond me. Does a girl have to like pink, wave a pompom, and ask for a pushup bra at 13 to be worthy of having the choice to be a birth mother someday? This is whack.

@cryptbeast3222 That's because most trans people by far made their decision to transition as ADULTS. They went through puberty. That proves puberty is not insurmountable for a trans person. Of course people who had a normal maturation have choices as adults. THAT is the POINT. Choice is their right as adults.

And no one ever decided at 42 that they suddenly met the right person to have a baby with, when they never thought they would. But on a deeper level, you're right and I know that. A person can not give a toss about kids' actual welfare, not have to lift a finger to keep opportunities open to them, and come out as looking progressive. That is very tempting, after all. In America, concern for anything but your own business (which mainly means your own $$$) comes across as dubious or weird. Why bother? It's not hard for you to make a case in this climate. That's why lobotomies existed here long after the Soviets banned them.
