Not sure how to say this without sounding like a giant troll ... but having spent significant time in Central America, people in the rich world are too fragile, too reliant on 'the system' to provide services and (the illusion of) 'safety'. Children (and adults) in poor countries walk or cycle along the side of the road (and cross roads as necessary) and nobody clutches their pearls about it.

  2. It's extremely odd how insular most countries are: I don't care what the 'Best X in Britain' is if there's a better X from elsewhere ... nations are legacy abstractions that seem anachronistic, unnecessary, and possibly harmful in a global world ...

  3. Don't get me wrong, yes, it's great when there are footpaths or dedicated cycle lanes ... but when there are not, improvise + adapt + overcome.

  4. Once somewhere has a reputation as part of 'flyover country', it becomes something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'm sure that East Germany can be lovely -- just like Iowa or Arkansas -- but there are so many more-interesting places to visit ...
