Not sure how to say this without sounding like a giant troll ... but having spent significant time in Central America, people in the rich world are too fragile, too reliant on 'the system' to provide services and (the illusion of) 'safety'. Children (and adults) in poor countries walk or cycle along the side of the road (and cross roads as necessary) and nobody clutches their pearls about it.

  2. Don't get me wrong, yes, it's great when there are footpaths or dedicated cycle lanes ... but when there are not, improvise + adapt + overcome.
