  41.  @NotShowingOff  Well, the level of service at 3-starred restaurants is substantially better than at generic chain restaurants ... servers at nice restaurants ought to be/will be paid more because they're doing different work than the basically-unskilled, low-quality service at lesser restaurants. That's orthogonal to tipping vs wage/salary: Tipping can be eliminated while still paying servers commensurate with the level of value that they provide.

  43.  @RayEccleston  On what basis do you assume that eliminating 'optional' 'gratuities' (in favour of higher on-menu prices + reasonable hourly wages for servers) would result in lower pay? You seem to assume that a 'reduction in pay' as a result of eliminating tipping is somehow a foregone conclusion. My goal isn't to pay less, it's to have restaurants pay servers market-rate wages that are included in prices listed on-menu ... just like the restaurant's rent and electricity and ingredient costs and the wages of non-tipped staff are currently.
