Um, the rest of the world exists. Service at non-US restaurants is no worse than in the US ... and I'd say actually better. The false friendliness and obsequiousness of tipped servers is unpleasant.
5
No, it's just a cost of doing business on the balance sheet.
4
@TheGreatWasian_ I mean, you're not wrong ... I generally think of it like this: For some people, saying derpy insults to complete strangers is the most significant/powerful they'll feel all day/week/year/life.🤷♀
3
Why would anyone spend anything CLOSE to 50% of their salary on a car? It's a depreciating asset that doesn't actually deliver that much value.
3
Tinned meat's great to store for the zombie apocalypse ... but why would anyone want to eat it during non-emergency situations?
3
What the heck is an 'annual monthly fee'?
2
@morrismonet3554 Fair 'nuf. You should think that you're lucky that it's actually meat if you're eating somewhere like Maccas, though.
2
Why would you do all this extra work when you can just have the bill autopaid ... and not waste your life fiddling with payments ... especially daily!?
2
Selling fake food labelled 'fake af' isn't a very good business model, though.
2
I've seen photos of 707s with jetbridges both fore and aft.
2
It's almost like poor people are poor because they're stupid.
2
Sincerely curious: Why do people buy Fossil / other fashion watches when Seiko / Citizen / Orient have higher-quality watches in the same price ranges?
2
That Chris Titus cameo though...
2
You're presupposing the weird, broken American system whereby tipping is expected ... rather than service-industry employees being paid reasonably by their employers ... as is the case approximately everywhere else.
2
Not personal, business: They have a business interest in promoting them.
1
Good luck with that, bruh.
1
Kangaroo and horse meat are both delicious.
1
@Chicago48 Why not board from both ends simultaneously?
1
Is it a co-incidence that the people who admit that the Metric System is better than their 'freedom units', yet refuse to switch ... are the same people who like tipping? Clearly, it's a conspiracy.
1
Unless people perceive signalling value in a specific brand, they're generally too poor / cheap to care about anything other than price.
1
How's your partner feel about not getting eaten out?
1
@handleyobusiness The point of dining in a restaurant is the experience, not saving money. If you don't value that, yes, stay home.
1
It's an oddly-American mistake to conflate income and social class.
1
Is this ur first time on the Internet!?
1
Hence the Amex ... Because it has no limit, there is no effect on credit utilisation.
1
Were you born yesterday?
1
Why? People who work those positions in countries not named Freedomurica seem to be perfectly happy being paid normally (i.e., by their employers).
1
@MidlifeMoneyMoves That literally makes no sense. Just adjust the prices so that it's net zero. This isn't partial differential equations.
1
California?
1
What do you mean 'banks dumped Amex cards'? Amex issues their own cards.
1
Protip: Don't be poor.
1
You're in big trouble if you rely on morality ... rather than incentives.
1
Cash: Why? I don't know anyone who still uses cash and is under 50.
1
Hot take: Parenthood is a luxury good, not something that people are entitled to.
1
Woah, like, exponential growth is exponential? TIL.
1
Then you won't be able to afford no-tipping restaurants ... and probably ought to learn how to cook ... like an adult.
1
You might not be aware ... but lawyers exist.
1
@mikea5745 Depends heavily on the aircraft type ... good luck with that if you have a flight on an rj
1
Fun fact: You CHOSE the cheap seats; you KNEW what you'd get; stop whinging about it.
1
That makes literally zero sense. Whether the prices are high or low, the servers' wages can be included in the on-menu prices ... and will vary with the class of restaurant.
1
@NotShowingOff Well, the level of service at 3-starred restaurants is substantially better than at generic chain restaurants ... servers at nice restaurants ought to be/will be paid more because they're doing different work than the basically-unskilled, low-quality service at lesser restaurants. That's orthogonal to tipping vs wage/salary: Tipping can be eliminated while still paying servers commensurate with the level of value that they provide.
1
The truth is that approximately nobody -- even among the 'woke' crowd -- gaf where their phone is built enough to pay the RRP delta that would come with one built in a rich country.
1
@RayEccleston On what basis do you assume that eliminating 'optional' 'gratuities' (in favour of higher on-menu prices + reasonable hourly wages for servers) would result in lower pay? You seem to assume that a 'reduction in pay' as a result of eliminating tipping is somehow a foregone conclusion. My goal isn't to pay less, it's to have restaurants pay servers market-rate wages that are included in prices listed on-menu ... just like the restaurant's rent and electricity and ingredient costs and the wages of non-tipped staff are currently.
1
If a merchant says that they don't accept Amex, I roll eyes, use one of my other cards ... and probably find a different merchant for future purchases.
1
@kat.8730 Part of the problem seems to be that most muricans -- especially the poorer ones -- never leave murica and have no frame of reference other than their pounds and inches and mfing US customary freedom gallons ... and tipping.
1
I would pay more for Scotch that contains cocaine.
1
Probably false ... The convenience of paying by card has a nonzero value.
1
@Sawyersaviation If you're in economy, you're very probably not boarding first.
1
@Sawyersaviation No, that's why it IS good to board first ... so that you don't have to deal with the economy crowd.
1
@Sawyersaviation Lolwut? You don't get any more flying time -- plane rotates for you at same time no matter when you board. But, I like drinks, and boarding first means that there's plenty of time for a couple before pushback.
