The magic of buying two of them is still there, even when nobody notices or mentions it!

Holy shit! What sort of monster plugs a heater into their UPS!?

I'm really glad you're doing this series ... I'm not very far in the journey yet, but I'm actively working to move my house to fully-electric ... with the exception of a gas hob in the kitchen. I care more about my cooking experience than reducing dino-burning in that one case.

@GrimmRiot Love that the person complaining about bots has the most-sus username ever, eh?

@GrimmRiot Jumping to conclusions: The proud tradition that keeps discussions online from approaching productivity/civility ;P

Need to have TC watch parties ... at Menards.

All hand-drawn, too!

1:50 but did you save big money?!?!!!!

Wait, do normal people turn their computers off!? I get that I have more servers than average, but I thought it wasn't that weird to keep your computer running 24/7.

It's like looking at old vacuum-tube computers -- there's way more VISIBLE complexity on the old machines ... and the circuit diagrams are still at the level that a brain can comprehend ... whereas once you've got an IC-based CPU, it's just a(n often literal) black box that just sits there with no obvious clues to what it's doing. Even the 6502 (which is pretty close to contemporary with Aztec) was ~4500 transistors which is way more ACTUAL complexity than this table has.

Wait, so I'm finally going to get medium blast!?!!!!!

I'd be curious to know how it's (semi-)reliably detecting transients with early-80s tech.

So damned many 'let's get this out onto a tray' missed opportunities ;P

Not an ad for Menard's ... but it could be ...

If you ever go to a bar or pinball museum that has one of these old electromechanical machines, you're almost guaranteed that one of them will be open/being serviced ... watching/talking to whoever's debugging/fixing the machine for a while is at least as much fun as playing pinball ... and I've always found them to be giant nerds who are all too happy to talk about what they're doing/how the machine works.
1
Hells yeah! More pinball machines need lizards in 'em ... although the t-rex seems to be broken on half the machines half the time.

@wayner396 For sure! I just found a copy of the table for sale for under $3k ... so, so tempted!

Fully aware that I'm the weird one -- I am a lizard commenting on YT, after all -- but I use hand-held (electric) lanterns after dark, and I 1) never find myself in a dark room 2) never need to fiddle with these ridiculous switches 3) never get confused 4) all of my sockets actually work 5) have never needed a 'remote control for lamps'.

If they just invented medium blast ...

In this vid: Literally hot-boxing your ... portable heater!?
1
This is bonkers! I owned several portable CD players that I bought specifically for MP3 playback ... did not realise this was considered so obscure!?

Complaining about stupid American 'freedom measurements' is equivalent to complaining about Internet Explorer's wilful failure to adhere to W3C standards. Standards exist because they make life easier. Failing to use them isn't ... ahem ... Edge-y?

@boogersaregood There are two things that I'm optimising for: 1. Communication. Can I see how much heat is being applied to each pan? 2. Precision. Can I directly/predictably/precisely control the first derivative of temperature? When I've used electric, neither of these is the case. I've been told that 2 is decently possible with induction, but that limits which pans you can use and provides no visual feedback regarding how much heat it's outputting to each pan.

Hot take: This, fundamentally, is no different to advertising. If you don't choose what to want and what to think about, somebody else -- whose interests probably don't align with yours -- will be happy to do that for you. (c.f., 'The Century of the Self')

Meh, keep the cool stuff for us nerds; everything goes to crap once normies are into a thing.

Nothing should ever be cooked in a microwave. Why do people even like the damned things?
1
@the_real_superstickman I find that that's generally true: When I've already bought a thing, I don't need to buy it. 🤔

How's the coffee compare to Coffee, Instant, Type II?

This is no different to using gears to slow down in non-emergencies -- I was always taught that this was the preferred way to drive, and that brakes ought to be only for 'Oh, shit! I really, really need to stop NOW.' cases (and for holding the car at a stop).
