Well, we DO convert mass to energy, a VERY VERY TINY amount of mass results in the kcalories we burn. But the vast majority of mass loss, of course, is respiration and perspiration. Remember, E=mc^2 applies to chemical reactions as well, when the bonding energy is released. Remember, a kcalorie is 4186.8 Joules, and dividing by c^2 (3 x 10^8)^2, that means it is released from 0.00000000000004652 kg or 0.00000000004652 gm or 4.652 x 10^-11 gm. So if you burn 500 kcalories in the night, you have converted 2.326 x 10^-9 gms to pure energy!! You're sort of like a STAR!!
