It's very simple. Sensible people have always known that they shouldn't have to work so hard. These are the people who created labor-saving devices to give them more time off, weren't interested in keeping up with the Jones's, and didn't care if they had a pile of luxuries that they never had time to enjoy because they were working too hard. They tend to be minimalist and not bother with what "society" wants them to do to conform. Their homes are usually not decorated with customary appurtenances, they are small, efficient, cluttered with the knick knacks they enjoy and may have a child's finger painting framed and hanging in a place of honor. Their stuff looks homemade and homebuilt, and they shop heavily and joyfully at thrift stores. Their cars are old but very well maintained, they have engines and running gear repaired and rebuilt. Their cars aren't waxed, but they are touched up and modified for custom usage.
