I was going to work on my motorcycle that morning. Our apartment in Santa Cruz had a parking courtyard. I had seen shuttles coming in over California several times, and they always came in over the northern coastlne sky, bright white meteors, beautiful! But this time, when I saw Columbia, looking north, it didn't look like a smooth glowing meteor, it looked ragged, and then watching it cross the coast and head across the state, it began losing glowing parts, like it was burning up, I saw two major size pieces detach. Then it was out of view. I drove to work crying, because I believed it would be lost. When I got to work only minutes later, I turned on our little TV, which we seldom use, and it showed people reporting its re-entry burnup and loss of communications, then we saw it coming down in pieces over east Texas, and crews from Nacogdoches picking up pieces of it!
