Fuel cells waste energy, renewable energy will be more in demand in future and conserving it will be key. Hydrogen takes 3-4 TIMES as much energy to produce for a given travel distance than EVs.

Is it worth it ? It is if you ONLY use it for small appliances, lighting, controls and computer/telecomm. If you want heat, use solar thermal and store it in insulated water pits. That way you will get the best value for far less than "rich people's" setups. If your family wants to own a car too, then it's best to limit your solar to what is needed to charge your car and use your car as a storage device for your home at night. MOST people CANNOT AFFORD solar like he is discussing. This makes solar seem like cheat to the rest of us who cannot afford the install cost. It's not, count up what you use for small devices, lighting and computer and you will be startled at how little the solar panels and batteries you actually NEED for that can cost. Then, solar south windows, masonry storage and insulated water storage you can easily do yourself for a small cost.

@ianmurray250 It still wastes the solar power 4 times over.

Nobody wants to pay 3-4 times more to go the same distance as in an EV.

@stuf3804 Lithium is EASILY recycled at LOW temperatures in your garage!! The so-called "rare earths" are called that because of their relative abundance among all other elements on the periodic table, NOT because they are not available or expensive. Their use is TINY! Nor do motors have to be made with Neodymium, they can use electrical field coils. NOR would people have to rely on the grid, a few solar panels will charge your car. And it is estimated the current grid would have NO trouble with 100 million electric vehicles, in fact it would use unused capacity at night. Oil has nothing whatsoever to do with it, except the price, which will continue to rise historically.

That would take 4 times as much sun to go the same distance as in an EV.

@altosack No, I'm a physicist, and the one thing you cannot get around is thermodynamics. Hydrogen production is 4-5 times less efficient use of electricity because of limits built into the very chemistry by laws of thermodynamics, and it can't be improved.

@magnushagelberg No, the cost of tanks is enormous compared to batteries to hold the same energy, and on top of that is the compressors, which are VERY high pressure, higher even than for scuba tanks,
1
@altosack You misunderstood the numbers. Hydrogen has NEVER been electrolyzed at anything approaching 30%, let alone 74%. The electron volts required can't achieve that efficiency.by Carnot thermodynamic statistics.
1
@magnushagelberg You would need a tank of hydrogen the size of a tank truck to go 20 miles.
1
@magnushagelberg Do the numbers, they still fill your trunk for a 100 mile range.
