150k isn't a lot of money...To retire in North America you'd want 2M to be comfy, 1M to be barebones. You can feasibly get millions if you invest maybe 5-6 grand a year in our 20s in the S&P500 by the time you retire. Saving it from a job would be tough but doable. Putting all that 150k in a house makes his wealth illiquid, not a good position to be in unless the property increases in value (which it most likely will but that is speculative.)

munchkin42 You can save about 2-3k/mo in China just teaching English (because they cover accommodations). You can have it in 6 years (maybe less than the timeframe you had in mind). I think in North America, we're just taxed so much, property prices are so high, and education is so damn expensive to make this believable. I think he worked as a programmer prior to going to China as well...Prob 60-80k in the States starting. Among people I know in Canada, having around 150k around 30 without inheritance is not unusual but our education costs are a fraction of what it is in the USA.

@bigpotpoker1 I knew a few people that did this by doing coop in university and staying at home with their parents when they were working (and investing in indexes from their first paycheck.) Love the name boss - shows up well in the reply.

@Jimmy Jazz Yes, I had a consulting coworker who was Punjabi and he said that it is common among Punjabis to have husband-wife pairs to drive the trucks. One sleeps while the other drives, and they basically just stay "on" all the time. Because they are "on" for so long, they are able to make more runs and collect more bonuses. Maybe not 250k USD but definitely six figures (he did say 200k+)...I still find it hard to believe. The average truck driver makes around 26/hour, it doesn't compute for me...
