  1. Rewriting is a good way to introduce new bugs. Those utilities are tested for decades. I also find the "faster" thing to be dubious until proof is presented. A lot of these utils are I/O bound and thus not code efficiency dependent.

  2. Most Unixes/Linuxes run on 64 bits now. The clock is extended to be 64 bits, so the 2038 limit is gone. Its up to the programs to update their storage requirements. It comes down to if the time is stored as LONG in C/C++, which automatically updates to 64. IE, we have 15 years to fix stupid. I'm not worried.
