  1. This is taking shortcuts with history. At the time of the Louisiana purchase, Napoleon was fighting a slave rebellion in Haiti and realized (correctly) that the US would start a war over the territory if it were not sold to them from France, which was exactly what happened to Mexico later. Thus Napoleon sold on good terms.
