  1. I disagree. Imagine if the cotton gin had not been invented. The huge amount of manual labor in cotton making would have kept the pressure for maintaining slavery on. It wasn't just the fact of the manual labor. Having it done by slaves allowed the consumers of cotton, including the "enlightened north" to ignore the problems created by its production, since it was done by "that other race".
