I like the talk in general but I think a point is missed. The reason some of us, or even most of us, develop side projects outside of work is because: A. I would never have learned programming unless I did that, since they don't hire you to do jobs you have not done for quite a while, and B. You have to combat underemployment to stay relevant in software. What is the typical software job? You get hired and interview for development work, but then the actual job means getting to reduce the bug list on existing products. Development today is %10 new code and %90 fixing up code that does not work. The actual development jobs are handed out like plums to the "top programmers", or simply assigned by the luck of the draw, ie., who came to work there first. Those are the "legendary" programmers who invariably left for other companies, and often left a mess to be cleaned up by the next crew of programmers.
