  1. Yes, it is easy to simply quote astronomical combination possibilities. However, these kinds of problems yield to common sense. Like exploring chess move trees, there are clearly paths that don't make sense, like paths after checkmate or loss of major pieces or important positions. Also, nature gives us a huge clue in terms of (for want of a better word) I'll call "progression". Proteins must hold together even while they are being formed. This sharply limits the possible paths to build a protein.
