  2. Yes, I used to buy 5 year old cars because I could not afford a new one. There is a reason car warranties expire at around the 3-5 year mark. Those cars typically self destruct within another 2-5 years, and you get a dead loss on the car. There is a reason people get rid of cars. Besides being of an age that the car is starting to show problems, you are also much more likely to get a car that has shown repair issues not revealed by the owner, who is under no legal obligation to show the repair record. The standard practice with many owners is if the car needs repair, do the repair then sell it, since it would be a dead loss otherwise. After I changed to purchasing new cars later in life when I could afford it, I have had virtually zero maintenance problems on my cars. Some of that is cars are getting more reliable. However, much of it is because I perform regular maintenance on my cars without fail. I KNOW where the car has been and I know of any issues with the car since it came from the factory.
