You want the truth? Tim Russert pushed the idea of Red is Republican and Blue is Democrat because the system of choosing party colors from flag colors had not been entrenched in the media and he saw the chance to entrench the practice. Russert was a leftist journalist and realized that most people had come to regard the democrats as pushing a pure socialist agenda, and therefore red would be the appropriate color, as indeed it was around the world. Thus he switched the colors, and the Republicans didn't complain, since it was obvious that the color red carried no significance to their party, not being socialist. The head of the communist party in France said it best when she said, when Obama won the presidency, "that is how socialists win in America, by denying they are socialists". And so it goes.
