The irridium satellite network has the ability to track airplanes anywhere in the world by their mode S transponders, and aircraft manufacturers and airlines are removing the ability of pilots to turn the system off.This real time tracking will enable tracking aircraft until the point at which they land or break up, meaning that the search area will be accurate to within a few meters.
