You need a high pressure vessel to contain the hydrogen, which after all, is a gas. As done with hydrogen cars, this adds a very heavy tank, and puts you right back into the weight issue. Moreover, a compressed hydrogen tank is a bomb waiting to go off. There are several companies working on carbon fibre tanks that are light, but high pressure. Its a work in progress.

@jamesowens7176 I'd agree but several large companies tried for decades to create technology that either fed fuel cells directly from methane or "cracked" methane into hydrogen and carbon, then ran the engine off the hydrogen. Its he same issue they have gone around and around. You have to do something with the carbon you separate even if it does work, and you can avoid it all by just burning the methane directly in any case.

What people keep forgetting with regards to electric aircraft is that in gas powered aircraft the weight of the fuel goes to zero as you fly. With batteries, the landing weight is the same as the takeoff weight.
