The lottery is a tax on people who can't do math. Our office had a group lottery buy, and I decided to kick in just to be "part of the group". This was to "get in on" a really big jackpot at that time. The yield was, of course, less than what was put in. I was curious, and I checked the results against what state of California said was the odds of winning. They matched almost exactly. The group held a vote to put the money left over into another lottery buy. Which, big surprise, reduced the pot to basically zero. Stupid people doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.
