  1. We absolutely need to tackle passenger car emissions in the USA, and I’m glad we’re seeing genuinely good EV efforts from all sorts of manufacturers. However, switching everyone to vehicles that weigh 25% more than their ICE counterparts has negative implications for infrastructure that we haven’t yet grappled with at scale. That, and the rare earth metals required to build the bulky ~100kWh batteries that Americans want (but maybe don’t need) has poor implications for the countries that happen to be sitting on reserves of these resources. The EV craze, if not considered more carefully, could turn the DRC into the next UAE. Destabilizing a country for a greenwashing campaign is just repeating history. Let’s just build more fucking trains already
