The reason is, California pensions are crazy enough to actually sell your stock if your ESG rating is low and they hold so much stock that they can completely tank your stock price which ruins your bonus and people are really weird about losing one year's bonus. Yes, I know you could just tie the bonus to actual company profits or something but that would be reasonable, we don't do that in business we tie it to the stock price
