While that's great to hear, chip manufacturing is a little bit more complex than simply building the plants. Even if a new plant is built and ready by next year if you understand anything about chip manufacturing, you're looking at two years after a plant is built. Because the average consumer has no idea how semiconductor manufacturing actually works, we are severely misunderstanding this shortage. Factor in the time to get the plants staffed get the equipment, and then assuming that you have designed your chip for that manufacturing process, 4 years.

Yes Financial programs love to emphasize these points but they also never tell you when the prices drop. For example, they talked about Lumber a ton. They haven't talked about the crash and lumber prices at all. Just don't expect the full story from these programs, they are much more likely to give you the Sensational bits and leave out any of the calming information

4:00 this is not the reason why they are behind. At the beginning of the pandemic the auto manufacturers canceled their orders. They then tried to get those slots back. The fire is just a cop out excuse. If they never canceled a ton of orders they'd be fine. On top of that, their chips are cheap as hell to make with little profit margin, so there is no expansion of that capability since it's very old tech.

@vibhuiyer6984 also we used to have chip manufacturing here in the US, there's a reason why we stopped doing it. The way American businesses are run on quarterly reporting doesn't play well with chip making so everyone divested their chip business. The chip industry right now is just playing the government and the public like a fiddle. Doesn't bother me, please, subsidize my investments and make the rich richer.

TSMC recently put out a statement saying that the automaker's need to be more careful with their just-in-time model for parts. This is because the automaker's misjudged the pandemic and cancel their orders. This is a very busy season for tsmc. New iPhone, Xbox, ps5, new graphics cards, etc. The idea that the automakers could cancel their orders and then ramp them back up was a vast miscalculation. You can't just do that in this industry and the automakers did not understand that

This beyond a 1 year issue. There's just no way these automakers are going to be able to get chip allocation necessary to catch back up. They aren't priority clients. Cars are important. The actual chips the automakers use though or bottom-of-the-barrel usually. These aren't the production lines that the chip makers want.these are Legacy lines the chipmaker's are the continuing to run. Unless the automakers decide to change how their cars work and use a more advanced Central Chip, there is no way they are going to get over this issue and catch back up
