Pete is an empty suit, the oligarchs knew this to a degree, but they thought he would just garner just enough to be not viable thus throw his votes would go to Biden or another attempted oligarch tool like Kamala or Beto had they been viable enough to continue. They started warming up to the idea of having Warren has plan B if Biden fucked up; lots of meetings of oligarchs with Warren around late summer through the winter, and financial articles, I happen to read a lot down played her hardcore stance on finance; they know she's more moderate than she let's on, that she was a republican most of her life, and her votes are more right wing when it comes to economics as well as foreign affairs. She's probably a bullshit queen, something that recently turned me off on her; I'm done with thinking these people are playing 3 dimensional chest for the people rather they're just straight up bullshitting them particularly after Obama but even the Clintons.
