People think we "liberate" nations is exactly what was done in WWII with Germany and Japan. Where we used various large rebuilding programs for those nations with names like Marshall Plan (officially the European Recovery Program, ERP). The $17 billion (equivalent to $198.13 billion in 2018) plus $5 billion in aid to 16 European nations. So the toll it costs for such reconstruction is extremely high, and it requires no resistance and a very thorough plan to ensure all planned reconstruction projects are finished and solid hold on funds to make impossible embezzlement and other corruption. And that's just the cost for Europe. Japan reconstruction was additional $14 billion (1950 dollars) in reconstruction aid. Iraq only got actual contribution $36 billion and with a mix of corruption and resistance to occupation many various works were not finished, water works programs 70% not finished. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investment_in_post-invasion_Iraq Intervention isn't cheap. And requires a nation to not resist occupation. We didn't quite provide enough nor was the entire nation in submission. That's why intervention doesn't generally work well. That's why nations that go on conquest, even if victorious, lose those conquered territories fairly quickly over the long run.
