That's because pandemics or even localized epidemics are more devastating to life and economics than war. Often driving in the past to famine, or sometimes famine causing an epidemic or pandemic... those two playing off each other. The death nail of Rome and entrance to the European Dark Age was quite literally the Justinian Plague 541 AD – 750 AD. Then it came back in 1347 to 1351 called the black death, the same disease the Bubonic Plague aka Yersinia pestis. And there were many other outbreaks of other diseases such as small pox and scarlet fever. And then a new strain of cholera that made its way around the world infecting water supplies during the 18th and 19th centuries.
