  2. He was abusing the anesthesia drug Diprivan. Oddly the drug really isn't habit forming in the same sense nicotine or cocaine is habit forming from physical addiction.  This was more of a mental addiction to what he felt like coming out of his many surgeries.  Kind of like the mental part of addiction on smoking of having something in your fingers, doing a ritual to transition between various activities, etc.
