  1. No they weren't at the time, and they would have been mad to be called Union members of the United States, they were confederates. They were committing treason and died a traitor's death... union being the victor. But then return to the nation. And since the confederate cause was largely on the fear of slavery becoming prohibited, they Confederacy of the Southern states will forever be considered evil, against freedom and for slavery.
