  1. The insanity about 1848 is why my great (5 times) grandpa (dad's side) immigrated to Texas which had just recently became a member of the US in 1845. He was tired of the constant wars. And he liked the idea of so much public land he could hunt without having to seek licenses and permissions from the nobility. My great (5 times) grandma, hated the climate, the backwater aspect of it, and everything about Texas. The family lore is she shut herself in their cabin on the vast land he bought for $50 bucks, and the natives would braid her long hair. She was so upset with my great grandpa that she divorced him, despite still living with him into old age until they had to go to an assisted living place in their 90's. I was born in Idaho. Been to Texas. I can see my grandma's perspective. Texas is big. But I like the North West better.
