Dealing with my parent's mental illness at her elderly age, its difficult. Particularly in the US since its extremely expensive, and many of our healthcare and social workers aren't that great at their job in rural areas. The there's the legal cause, when the person doesn't think they need treatment, they have to develop incidences that demonstrate their risk to themselves and the public. Fortunately, we we're able to get her help in our state mental facility, and the judge determined the state would take temporary custody of her and fund the entire treatment which would have been beyond expensive. She was only in treatment facility not quite a year. And she's doing okay now. Still has issues though. Human frailty either mental or physical really pisses me off.
