Eludes me too. It's groupthink at its best (or worst)

He says "AI" but he really means "automation". He should really say "our field of science has shunned computational approaches for 60 years, and now we find it's really useful to automate stuff". It's really the same that happened with statistics 20 years ago, giving raise to machine learning at scale.

I call BS until they present actual science made possible by actual generative AI aka LLM/ChatGPT. Until then I'll assume he says "AI" but really means 'automated discovery by combinatorial math' aka pruning a search space. It seems that it has only now become apparent to many scientists the power of mathematical optimization.

Nobody doubts we can build a machine that behaves as if it was conscious. As long as its a machine, i.e. not an organic living being, that's just a simulation. Not life. We won't ever create life.

💯 well put

Most artificial systems have a life cycle of approx 5 to 20 years, max.

So I asked ChatGPT to give locations on Earth where quasicrystals could form. Well, it didn't give the answer this guy claims.

She clearly does not understand how large language models work. There is no consciousness, even not a little. There is no "there" in those models, no one at home. Model inspection is no proof for consciousness, it is proof for storage and compression. Correction algorithms are not active in those LLMs, the LLMs dont get changed after training, and training is a process applied to it rather than within it.
