As usual Joscha combines lots of fancy words to form an endless stream of staccato that numbs his listener's cognitive ability to check for nonsense, and ends up getting a response of amazement despite having failed to provide even a shred of useful evidence to his outlandish claims. It's a skill no doubt and I admire his ability to get attention.

Actually the other way around. Pinker observes the world has improved objectively. Mearshimer claims Pinker is wrong because there is no observed perfection.
15
He is a professor. Not employes on economic output.
10
@huveja9799 as Pinker explained: when more humans live less painful lives than ever before that's progress.
8
No, in light of the data it's just plain wrong to claim there is no progress.
5
Mearsheimer's argument is that "the politics" should define truth just for the sake of good order, and he likes the truth to be as he sees fit. Not a fan
3
Mearsheimer: we need politics (by which he means a dictator) to tell people what to think. Progress is measured in what the political establishment defines as progress. Pinker: Education has made people competent in deciding their everyday needs and take democratic decisions. Progress is measured by objective facts on human quality of life.

@antcarlosjr that's just word mincing. Progress is real whether you call that moral or technical.
2
No Mearshimer thinks he has a monopoly on what people should think.
2
I don't get your conclusion re free will.
2
@squatch545 the world has improved and Pinker even mentioned specific areas. Denying that is not a basis to call his argument wrong, and calling him wrong as a person is an ad hominem attack which is not acceptable in science.
2
@AntonMochalin please study history.
2
@ericberg2131 Pinker uses stats that actually matter to people. Like life expectancy, living standards, access to food, access to medicine, education, wealth, ability to work etc.
2
@squatch545 I am not sure what world or timeline you describe but clearly it is not rooted in the reality of the year 2023 on planet Earth. Your claims are absurd and in direct contradiction to the actual reality for at least 90% of humanity, who all have access to food, medicine and energy (which drives wealth and thus living standards). If you prefer to live in the woods soley dependent on yourself please do that. No one will stop you from leaving civilization.

The voice at the end 😵💫😱

Well put.

Watch that again. It is the other way around

@antcarlosjr words matter as you say, so do facts. By progress we commonly mean "better now than before", and it's measuered by the reality of things, aka facts. The facts quite simply show that for most of humans life is better now than is has ever been, for a large portion it is better by whole social hierarchies (life now at the middle level is better than life was at the top 150 years ago). Morality is not a dimension of progress, all that matters are the facts. Mearsheimers argument tries to deny facts on grounds of some elusive prior necessity to agree on what he calls first principles, without ever defining what those are. However neither morality nor first principles are necessary to induce progress, as demonstrated by facts.

@christopherhamilton3621 Oh I can follow him perfectly. I can also see through his arguments, and they don't add up.

To be fair, that's his entire spiel 😊

Joshua Bach as usual exudes an endless stream of meaningless dribble. It's fascinating everyone seems to think he has some meaningful insight.
