European automakers like VW and Mercedes are investing in Chinese ev tech to build their own models. VW invested 700 million dollars for a 5% stake in Chinese evmaker Xpeng, to get access their tech. They have also invested a billion dollars to set up an ev R&D centre in Hefei China. Not back home in Germany. While Mercedes are planning to build an all electric CLA model using the autonomous driving solutions provided by Chinese start up Momenta. They have made some investments in this start up after realizing their potential, early on.
