  1. Its not unique to just China/ HongKong. Unless you are a local, you are probably not aware that a somewhat similar but less cumbersome arrangement exist here in Malaysia. A citizen from West Malaysia has to go through immigration using either our passport or national ID, when travelling to the eastern part of the country. How long we can stay is determined by the state authorities there. This arrangement was a result of our unification betwen east and west parts.
