@ironboy3245 They only solved it because their citizens are socially responsible and compliant. Would never work in the West - people would gripe that the homes were not good enough, or were in the "wrong" place etc.

Suburbs are the ideal halfway point between urban and rural. Yes, they're inefficient, but they answer the overwhelming preference people have to NOT live in a city. Very few humans genuinely want to live in crowded places - especially when such cramped quarters comes with a total lack of community (due to a renting and thus transient populace). We can't all be rural, so suburbs go some way to servicing the better mental health that comes with space and nature.
