Whereas if a Japanese person moves to the West, learns the language, wears the clothes, and takes an interest in the culture ... it's applauded. The white people who are discomforted by this, reveal their own racism. They cringe because subconsciously, they can't stand to see white people give so much deference to a non-white culture. Make no mistake ... they are the real white supremacists.

Congratulations 😉 For the other thing, not the subscribers 😊

I suspect your experience is unique. I lived in a country not far from where you are, and in which locals assumed I couldn't understand them, and my experience was entirely different. I would put it at a clean 50/50, 'nice' and 'mean' - and the mean can be incredibly offensive. FTR I'm not tall, or fat, or tattooed, or any of those appearance-related things that trigger unkind comments about Westerners. I also adhered to cultural norms, so it wasn't my behaviour either. This stuff happens simply because we're different. It's just good old xenophobia.

@OrientalPearl The other thing. Unless my instincts are wrong. Which they totally could be 🤓

Indonesians do understand Malay, as it's technically the same language. The difference is that Indonesians have a much stronger accent. It's like the difference between a Scottish person's English, and an English person's English.

It's not been my experience that no one is ever saying anything bad about you. Quite the opposite, in fact. Same for my bilingual friends and family. People say the most outrageous things - especially about Westerners. I think this is an important truth, because it reminds us that we (Westerners) have a lot to learn about manners and civility.
