  1. I suspect your experience is unique. I lived in a country not far from where you are, and in which locals assumed I couldn't understand them, and my experience was entirely different. I would put it at a clean 50/50, 'nice' and 'mean' - and the mean can be incredibly offensive. FTR I'm not tall, or fat, or tattooed, or any of those appearance-related things that trigger unkind comments about Westerners. I also adhered to cultural norms, so it wasn't my behaviour either. This stuff happens simply because we're different. It's just good old xenophobia.
